My painting ‘The past of others’ idyllic ’89’ depicts a yellow nook that many will recognise. It’s a small yellow playhouse with a red roof and a mobile door, resting on a plastic frame. I liked this positive identification, so I started collecting photos where this small house is seen. I believe that this step helps us to go beyond portraying the personal past. The photos are absolutely mundane, mostly capturing an almost accidental moment. The majority were taken in the late ’80s, i.e. right before or after the political shift in Hungary. The aim is to create a certain subjective documentation of this era. I’m fascinated by the visual map of my generation’s roots and past and this small house acts as a link between the pictures.
